The first courthouse, built in 1839, was a one story frame building 20x36 feet on a 123x44 lot donated by John Anderson. The site has been debated; some historians say it was on the northwest corner, about where the city Police Department is today. It was used not only for county business but also for social meetings and religious services. At one time school was held there also. The citizens put their courthouse to good use: in a few years, another one was needed. This first building was moved to various places around Clinton. By the 1940's, Mr. Elmer Leinweber of 800 block of East Woodlawn used the building for a garage and auto repair shop. The building was razed in 1951.
